Scouting for Sustainable Mobility

Paving the way for sustainable mobility

Why scouting for sustainable mobility solutions?

This scouting aimed to identify European startups that are shaping the future of sustainable mobility. Our corporate partners, Carris and Brisa, were looking for disruptive initiatives designing innovative, efficient, affordable, safe and green mobility solutions. The end goal is to attract the most promising in Portugal and figure out how to adapt their technologies to the city of Lisbon.

A joint action with our Impact Hub European Cluster

We coordinated this project with 6 other Impact Hubs from our Impact Hub European Cluster: Impact Hub Zurich, Amsterdam, Munich, Madrid, Berlin and Ruhr.

In March 2018, we joined forces to launch a joint communication campaign that reached 1.950+ community members and 220+ entrepreneurs. Within a one-month marketing campaign and industry screening, we identified a set of 56 startups.

Then, Impact Hub Lisbon pre-selected the most promising 49 startups for a in-depth analysis.

Analysis, impact assessment & output

First of all, while most of the startups operate in Germany (53%), the others are divided between the Swiss (14%), the Dutch (12%) and Spanish (21%) markets. Plus, more than half of the startups is already running operations with a successful business model and is now looking for ways to scale it (55%).

Afterwards, our team divided the mobility sector and startups into 3 main areas of activity – Smart Mobility, Electric Mobility and Vehicle Technology. The most flourishing sub-sectors (in terms of solutions provided) were Big Data (19%), Logistics (14%), Navigation (14%) and Manufacturing (14%).

Furthermore, we performed an impact assessment in order to evaluate the startups according to 3 criteria: scalability, innovation and cost/benefit. We realized the scalability is the most outstanding asset of these startups.

In addition, we noticed these sustainable mobility initiatives are  mainly contributing to six of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

  • SDG 8 – Decent work and economic growth
  • SDG 9 – Industry, innovation and infrastructure
  • SDG 11 – Sustainable cities and communities
  • SDG 12 – Responsible consumption and production
  • SDG 13 – Climate action
