Time has come to celebrate our first anniversary! One year ago, Lisbon officially joined the Impact Hub Global Network, the world’s largest network based in 100+ cities and focused on building entrepreneurial communities for positive impact at scale. First of all, the intention of Filipe Portela and Gonçalo Ahrens Teixeira, Co-Founders at Impact Hub Lisbon, was to bring together unlikely allies to leverage business as a force for good. They also wanted to boost the social innovation ecosystem in Lisbon. Read on to know more about Impact Hub Lisbon, our journey and achievements!
Impact Hub Global Network – The reason why
The world is being called to overcome social and environmental challenges while facing significant disruption to governance and economies. As a globally connected and locally rooted network, we believe the only way to design a more just and sustainable future is by building bridges between collaborators from all sectors – public institutions, corporations, startups, entrepreneurs and social innovators.
The United Nations Office in Geneva acknowledges Impact Hub as a driver of community engagement, helping not only to foster but also to extend the efforts directed to tackle the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) via entrepreneurial and innovative actions.
Impact Hub Lisbon has the ambition to become the largest community catalyzer for positive impact in the Portuguese Capital. We are developing an impact-driven ecosystem through our collaborative workspace, events, corporate social innovation consultancy and acceleration programs for social initiatives.
One year of impact
Last month, we gathered our community and partners for our 1st year anniversary. It was the opportunity to celebrate what has been achieved so far.
Impact Hub Lisbon moved from a 100m2 pilot space to a newly renovated warehouse of 500m2 in Alcântara. Plus, the hub-community grew from 20 to 100+ members from 15 different nationalities. In addition, we organized or hosted more than 100 events gathering 4000+ people. Last but not least, we co-created 4 acceleration programs that supported 50+ social startups, and 2 capacity building programs that empowered 30+ people in a socially vulnerable situation. We co-designed these programs hand in hand with public and private organisations that teamed up with us to take their corporate social responsibility to the next level.
On this special day, we were pleased to welcome the Mayor of Lisbon – Mr. Fernando Medina. He opened the festivity emphasizing how crucial sustainability is for the city of Lisbon, recently elected European Green Capital 2020. He concluded underlining the key role of social entrepreneurship as a mindset shift to figure out new solutions to complex issues our society is facing.
Then, the President of Portugal Social Innovation Mission (Estrutura de Missão Portugal Inovação Social – EMPIS) – Mr. Filipe Almeida – highlighted the need for social entrepreneurs to have a dedicated space to nurture and flourish their ideas.
Impact Hub Lisbon was also delighted to have the Secretary of State Assistant and Administrative Modernisation – Ms. Graça Fonseca – as guest. She presented GovTech, which is a governmental initiative aiming to reward and support startups that are designing innovative product and service-based solutions to help reach the SDGs. We are proud to announce that Impact Hub Lisbon contributed to 15 out of the 17 SDGs within its first year of activity.
